A Heartbreaking Transformation a Single Year Has Caused in the US
In late October 2024, the situation was completely separate. Ahead of the national election, reflective Americans could admit the nation's significant faults – its injustices and imbalance – yet they could still identify it as the United States. A democratic nation. A land where the rule of law held significance. A nation guided by a respectable and upright leader, despite his elderly years and declining health.
Currently, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we reside in. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and forced into vehicles, sometimes denied due process. The left side of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. The leader is harassing his opponents or alleged foes and insisting federal prosecutors hand over a huge total of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are deployed across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The military command, renamed the Defense Ministry, has practically liberated itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of what could amount to close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Colleges, legal practices, news companies are yielding from leader's menaces, and billionaires are regarded as aristocracy.
“America, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the edge into autocracy and totalitarianism,” Garrett Graff, wrote this past summer. “Finally, faster than I imagined possible, it did happen in this country.”
One awakes with fresh terrors. And it's hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost we have become, and the speed at which it has happened.
Yet, it is known that Trump was legitimately chosen. Despite his profoundly alarming previous administration and following the cautions that came with the understanding of the conservative plan – even after the president personally said publicly he planned to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – a majority of citizens chose him rather than Kamala Harris.
While alarming as today's circumstances is, it's more daunting to recognize that we are just several months into this presidential term. Where will an additional three years of this decline leave us? And what if that period turns into an prolonged era, as there is no one to stop this ruler from deciding that additional tenure is essential, possibly for defense purposes?
Certainly, all is not lost. We will have midterm elections in 2026 that could create a new balance of power, in case Democrats retake one or both houses of the legislature. There exist government representatives who are trying to exert certain responsibility, like lawmakers currently starting a probe concerning the try to money grab from the justice department.
And a presidential election in the next cycle could start our journey toward restoration precisely as the previous vote placed us on this unfortunate course.
We see numerous residents marching in urban areas throughout communities, similar to recent recently in the No Kings rallies.
An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the slumbering force of the nation is stirring”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or amid the sixties activism or during the Watergate scandal.
During those times, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.
He claims he understands the signals of that awakening and notices it unfolding currently. For proof, he points to the widespread marches, the broad, cross-party resistance against a television host's removal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to accept government requirements they solely cover what is sanctioned.
“The dormant force consistently stays asleep until some venality grows too toxic, some action so disrespectful toward public welfare, certain violence so loud, that he is compelled other than to stir.”
It's a hopeful perspective, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will prove to be right.
Meanwhile, the crucial issues persist: can America ever recover? Can it reclaim its status internationally and its devotion to constitutional order?
Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My cynical mind indicates that the final scenario is true; that everything might be gone. My positive feelings, nevertheless, convinces me that we have to attempt, through all methods we can.
In my case, as a media critic, that means pushing media professionals to commit, more thoroughly, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For others, it may be participating in election efforts, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to protect electoral access.
Under twelve months back, we existed in a separate situation. A year from now? Or in several years? The fact is, we are uncertain. The only option is to strive to persevere.
