Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.
Playoff Climax
This led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To play with him the last two days was really special,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
