Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
