Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new development, Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how critical this race is,” Adams stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the struggle between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention globally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
