Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
