Radioactive Seafood Issue: Indonesia Confronts Contamination in Major Manufacturing Area
An extensive manufacturing zone situated on the outskirts of Jakarta is addressing nuclear pollution following a government taskforce found presence of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 production facilities inside the area, which includes businesses shipping chilled seafood.
Urgent Measures and Goods Recall
This discovery has led to immediate decontamination operations and the relocation of local inhabitants, following a similar contamination scare in the US that was traced back to the Indonesian plants.
An important international retailer is one of the businesses that have recalled items from their stores after the discovery.
Probe and Discovery of Pollution
Indonesian authorities launched an inquiry when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of frozen coated prawns exported by an Indonesian company.
Officials issued an warning advising suppliers and sellers to discard the goods and not sell it, although the detected level was far below the agency's action limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had found would not present an acute risk to the public.
The FDA explained: “The main health effect of concern after longer term, repeated low dose exposure (eg through consumption of polluted food or water over time) is an increased risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”
Extensive Contamination and Health Examinations
Radioactivity tests revealed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing zone were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not identify the twenty-one other manufacturing facilities, but confirmed they would immediately undergo decontamination processes conducted by the country's atomic energy authority.
A senior official stated that residents living in strongly polluted zones would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, emphasizing that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.
Health authorities also conducted examinations on nearby workers and residents located near the manufacturing estate, finding 9 people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were sent to a medical facility before being cleared to go back.
Cleanup and Containment Measures
The contaminated locations will right away receive cleanup procedures by the national atomic energy agency. Authorities have further selected the area of a recycled metal factory as an isolation center for contaminated goods.
Indonesia, which has no atomic power plants or arms programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas.
Origin of Contamination and Trade Restrictions
A taskforce spokesperson told the media that recycled metal shipments were the probable source of contamination and confirmed the government would promptly impose limits on scrap metal arrivals. He said that vehicles were also being inspected for possible contamination as they moved through the area.
Regarding Caesium-137 and Public Risks
Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive isotope that typically enters the environment as a consequence of nuclear experiments or incidents, like Fukushima or Chernobyl. Small amounts are found in earth, food and the atmosphere.
The level detected in the chilled prawns was far lower than regulatory action limits, but the agency explained prolonged contact to including low doses of caesium was associated to an elevated risk of the disease.
Recall Information
The recalled shrimp was sold at major retail locations across at least a dozen US states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
