The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, every region of California is experiencing drought conditions. This milestone arrives after grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified blaze threats and strained its massive agricultural sector.

An Update Indicates An Absence of Drought

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program confirmed that all of California is without dry or drought conditions. This change resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that replenished water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to significant overflow, power outages, and tragic losses. While those storms helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, areas like Modoc County were considered experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

Yet, authorities caution that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation show it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This mountain snow, which supplies about a third of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for future water availability. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to preserving this hard-won hydrological health for the coming seasons.
