In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Player Perks

The contract grants a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with compensation of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:

• $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250K for placing fourth through 10th.
• Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

Having earned league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His last year was limited to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that scored teammates for a thrilling one-run win. The very next day in the title match against the United States, he slugged a tying shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
