The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the site from which the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
